Experience the beginning of your journey by train courtesy of New Zealand Rail. The Northern Explorer will take you from Auckland to Wellington taking in the extraordinary range of scenery of the North Island. Note this only operates on Monday, Thursday & Saturday.
After a stint in our capital city you will cross Cook Strait to Picton on the Interislander Ferry to connect with the Coastal Pacific and travel through to Christchurch. Note this train is replaced by coaches from May to September.
Next is the famous TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth where, on disembarking, you will take delivery of your hire car and move down the West Coast towards the Southern Lakes region.
After a few days soaking in the amazing scenery of lakes and mountain vistas, travel across to the East Coast, stopping at Dunedin to board the Taieri Gorge train for a great days outing. Then it is on to Christchurch and the end of your holiday, or we can add a few extra days so you can visit Hanmer Springs and the Marlborough wine region, and not forgetting Nelson and the Abel Tasman National Park area.
